Unintended consequences

Sometimes upholding the letter of the law can have unintended consequences.
  • Dr. Anna Pou - Remember her, she was the Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor that chose to stay in Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans, LA during Katrina Hurricane to help where she could. http://virtualmentor.ama-assn.org/2010/09/hlaw1-1009.html (AMA Journal of Ethics). Boiling this down, after grueling conditions, and really bad situations a lot of people died. Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti, Jr filed charges against her. Grand Jury returned a No Bill. But Civil charges against her lasted for years and cost a lot of money not to mention the damage to her reputation. All for naught.

Unintended Consequences - Next time, a doctor that is in similar circumstances will think twice about hanging around and save himself/herself first. Is this not the natural thing to do having seen what reward a person gets for doing the best he/she can under the circumstances. No wonder doctors don't stop at car wrecks on the highway. Who loses..... why, me and you do.

  • Danziger Bridge Shootings - Remember cops shot people in the heat of an emergency. That happens. Wrong folks get killed in war and any severe emergency where regular law breaks down. Remember the pics of looters taking things that they couldn't even use. Then sitting at the Cajun dome for someone to rescue them. School buses sitting idle cause no trained, union drivers..... how stupid. All this is gonna happen again, you know. I think their biggest crime (mistake) is trying to cover it up.

Unintended Consequences - Cops are gonna be real careful about who they shoot. Look the other way if its close. Bad guys coming to your area may just get a pass. If you thinks cops are bad, call a hippe or your local drugge. OR perhaps, dare I suggest, PREPARE TO DEFEND YOURSELF... what a novel idea.

  • Stimulus Package I and II - Current administration believed that giving money away to whatever group would cause jobs and everybody would be better off. It just ain't worked. Common sense, uncommon as it is, tells most of us that spending borrowed money will only make you seem better off till the bills come in. That's the way countries work too.

Unintended Consequences - Cash for clunkers program. I envision lots of near new cars on the market when those that got um can't pay the payments, insurance, repairs. I see lots of newer cars driving around in 100 degree weather around here with he windows down. Meaning - U guess  it. If you need a cheap car, just wait they are gonna be available.

  • Extending unemployment coverage creates jobs??? What???

Unintended Consequences - I feel ashamed even writing this as though someone don't already know. Giving people money not to work only encourages people not to work...duh... Mac Donald's has been advertising for workers. When you have no job... you are not too good to do any honorable work. Its easier to get a job, if you have a job. I thought everybody knew that.

  • Being soft o "Illegal" aliens.

Illegal aliens are nice people that just want to make a better life in this country. We should not fault them for that....... WHAT? Illegal is the action word here. How come illegal aliens are not bad and illegal whiskey is???? This is convoluted thinking. Right now, the SW states are paying the price in healthcare, education, welfare, transportation, etc. But.... its coming to your town any day. When you can't get into the ER because of all the illegals and welfare people (frequently the same), when your child has to learn Ebonics in school or go back a grade. If you can't speak Ebonics, let me pass you a lesson.

Shall we continue? Course you will need to teach this language in preschool so as to not disrupt your child, grand-child's race to the top.

Got diverted there.

Illegal aliens - Now that I think about it, why should good folk from outer space not be given all the rights and privileges of us earth bound creatures.  How do we know they are illegal in the first place. They may have just left us here while they went shopping zillions of years ago and come to take us home or change our diaper. Boy, I'll bet they're surprised. This is what you get for leaving your children alone to long.

Farm View of the World thru the quarter moon

Ode To The Little Brown Shack Out Back - Bobby Bare
Now it was not a castle fair but I could dream of future there, an build my castle to the yellow jackets drone. I could orbit round the sun, fight with General Washington. Or be a king upon a golden throne.

      •  Indeed my cousins Wade, Dick & Becky of Smithville had one. I always wondered what the varmints in the bottom were.

      • Drug Testing - I believe it is proper and wise to drug test those persons that receive government money for having done nothing, doing nothing and expected to do nothing. I.e. welfare, WIC, and all the other myriad of programs that have the same basics. Flunking the drug test would result in a two strikes and you're out.

      • Free Stuff - Frequently listed under "rights". I do not believe every citizen has a right to be provided a Cell Phone, TV, etc. Having traveled all over the world and living in other countries long enough to get a small understanding of what goes on there, "Rights" have a very different meaning.

      • You do not have a "Right" to free medical care. I believe this country, when its prosperous, should provide basic medical care for even the poorest citizen. Dopers, free loaders, and the like should not be in the hospital Emergency Rooms as their source of medical care. Discrimination is appropriate, except for emergencies, of course. You do not have the "Right" to a free education. You do not have the right to TWO seats on an airplane when you bought the right to ride in one seat. You did not buy transportation from one place to another no matter what your cost to the transportation provider.

You have the "Right" to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

      • I support the creation of community boards to review random samples of welfare claims with the mission of weeding out the phony. Summons for this could be the same as Jury duty. I'd even like handicapped stickers in there somewhere.

      • College - Everyone does not need a college degree to be successful. Just getting a "degree" does not insure success. Remember the "underwater basket weaving" degrees of my age? A degree in Philosophy, sociology, and Psychology does what after graduation day? Then there is "Art History" and "English Literature". Please outline a career path for either and send an email. "Art Appreciation" is OK if your family is Vanderbilt or Gates.

An equal time spent being an apprentices in Air Conditioning/Heating (HAVC), plumbing will provide a person with a career. People just are not doing the apprenticeship time to get qualified to be on their own. And, I doubt that Air conditioning is going to be replaced real soon.

Special Education Teachers should be in greater demand. I mean in positions where you are not a baby sitter to "mainstream", wheelchair, full-time assisted in life's daily challenges, students. Why? Because we are no longer putting them in a "home" and forgetting they (some) may have potential. However, a country in decline, may not be able to afford such things in the future.

In fact, real teachers should be in high demand with good salaries. Not talking about the "unionized" mess of today. System to grade, evaluate....yes, I mean really evaluate teaching skills and subject knowledge. Keep the good ones and sack the bad ones. I know its easier to talk about than to do it.

      • Repatriation: Saying you are sorry for and giving money to Black folks because some Indians, Chinese, black folks were slaves a long time ago. How absurd. I didn't own or rent any Blacks and none of the Blacks in the US were ever slaves of an American citizen. The Germans don't pay the Jews. The Japanese don't pay the Chinese. No-one pays the Okinawa's (and they be run over by everyone).  This is just another Jesse Jackson con. More something for nothing. The really stupid part is that some sane white/black/maroon folks are going along with this nonsense.

      •  Public funding of "The Arts". If the Boston Symphony cannot be self sustaining or make money, it should be downsized to the point it does. The idea that Art is a key element of a modern society may have some merit. However, creating that out of public money does not make the society modern. The opera, the symphony, the Theater, etc is not attended by a majority of the population. Course getting tax proposals passed that do that does not speak well of the electorate either. The people that believe Art is a necessity to life are wrong. Its not. Good to have but when the belt gets tight, that is one that needs to go first. There are actually a lot of these type expenses that need to go during hard times. Or at least no be on the Public Dole.
      • Coal, Natural Gas, Oil, Nuclear...... Electricity
        • Coal is dirty
        • Oil is dirty
        • Nuclear is dangerous
        • Natural Gas - no condemnation yet.

As we go about shutting down nuclear plants, running the coal companies out of business, shutting down oil production. Where exactly is the electricity going to come from to power your house, your job, your car, your stuff. Our stuff. The countries stuff???? Where? If you choose solar or wind, where is the nearest power plant for your area?

      •  Traumatized: A traumatic event involves a single experience, or an enduring or repeating event or events, that completely overwhelm the individual's ability to cope or integrate the ideas and emotions involved with that experience.
        •  Were you ever traumatized? and how has that effected the rest of your life.?
        • I went thru a war and wasn't traumatized.
        • Being told, in a loud military voice, that you did wrong entering litigation against your mother for a bank account in her name is WRONG, REALLY WRONG. Some were traumatized so they tell me. I don't think anyone wins.
